Facebooking and Work

Posted in Uncategorized on March 31, 2008 by lmdiorio

Facebook and all of the other social networking sites are all the buzz. I admit that I have pages on a few of them. I work in a office where the demographic is mainly early to mid 20’s and because of this there is a lot of Facebooking going on during work hours which I admit I do, do on a daily basis. But the question remains – how much Facebooking is appropriate while you are at work?

To me Facebook is not like other more professional social networking sites such as LinkedIn, Plaxo et. al. Although it can be used as a professional tool – most of the postings that I see are purely personal updates and pictures. Now I have an office separate from the open office area that houses most of my fellow employees. Each time that I walk out to ask a question or discuss a client project with someone I see certain people not only on Facebook but also playing “scrabilicious” or whatever it is called. They do this in plain site and they are constantly doing it. My favorite part of all of this is when I ask them to do something as simple as a routine report – I get pushback because they are so “busy.”

I have a routine where I take a break about every 1/2 hour or so and check my personal e-mail, Facebook and any of the other blogs that I read. This to me is a good way to make sure that I break up my day a little and I don’t get distracted when I am working on my WORK.

So I called our IT person and I’m going to have Facebook blocked on our server. It should be interesting to hear the complaints when they can’t get on their Facebook account. It should also be interesting to see if work productivity increases or not.  I hope I don’t get in trouble. welcome_31.gif

Hi Everyone – Welcome to my blog, Deuce and Sully.  I decided that I wanted to start a blog. I’m not planning on having any particular topic drive my posts but rather they will most likely be about my special interests and current events.

I’m really looking forward to posting some great thoughts and information.  I hope that I hear great feedback as well.  More to come!
